One sense ahead to enhance security and save lives.

Viken is derived from “sixth sense.” Our name combines VI, the roman numeral for six, and “KEN”, from the Latin meaning knowledge or range of sight. Along with our tag line “One Sense Ahead” our name signifies our company’s focus on detecting public threats with breakthrough technologies.

Discovering new ways to use technology to foil modern threats, save lives, and ultimately create a safer world.

As technology plays an ever more significant role in safety and security efforts, we’re at the leading edge, developing new devices that are extensible, multi-layered, and open-sourced so they work together to keep our world safer. We’re continually innovating to ensure our products are intuitive and safe, giving those who use them–and their communities–peace of mind.

Jim Ryan

President & Chief Executive Officer

Prior to joining Viken in 2018, Jim was Executive Vice President of Security & Power Systems at Analogic, where he led the introduction of checkpoint computed tomography for aviation security, rapid DNA for law enforcement, and various imaging and precision power products for medical diagnostics. He also spent eight years as a management consultant at Booz Allen & Hamilton, focusing on clients in the aerospace & defense, healthcare, and government sectors. He started his career in the advanced engineering group at Ingersoll-Rand designing handheld products. Jim earned his Master’s in Business Administration and Master’s in Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Bachelor’s in Engineering from Lehigh University.

Jim says he will never work for a “big” company because what he values most about Viken is the freedom to tinker in the lab and come up with new products without asking for permission first. As someone who admits that he hates to relax, in his free time, Jim can be found remodeling houses and watching physics videos.
